In the spirit of our core values, SCS encourages staff members to participate in volunteer opportunities by giving back to the communities in which we live and work. The firm recognizes that participating in these activities supports and enhances our communities, and also enriches the lives of staff members.

This week we asked Sue Van Portfliet, Director of Human Resources, on her recent experience volunteering at the Humane Society of West Michigan.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

I am an animal lover, and there was a need at the Humane Society, so it seemed like a great fit for me to be able to help out in an area that I am passionate about. The team at the Humane Society seemed so grateful for our efforts—that made it even better!

How was your volunteer day like?

The staff at the Humane Society did a great job of lying out when we should show up, what we should bring, and what we would be doing. We were greeted at the door, and given a tour before we began our work. That quick tour helped me to gain a clearer knowledge about what they do and how they do it. Then they put us to work.

Jen and Myself were put in charge of laundry—which they had a never ending supply of. As soon as we got the piles down they built right back up again. This is a chore that is never ending for them, and they were so appreciative at how much we were able to get done in the short time we were there.

Which one of your coworkers would you invite to volunteer next time?

I would encourage all of my co-workers to take advantage of the Volunteer Time Off “VTO” day! Volunteer in whatever area you are passionate about! I found it to be a great experience. I know my efforts were appreciated, and it felt good to be able to give back to a cause that I feel is a worthy one.

Sue, thank you for all you do! We truly appreciate you!
